Students of most Nigerian public universities complain bitterly about the constant extortion of huge sums of money from lecturers for normal services which the students are entitled to free.
Some students from a university in Imo state complained that some lecturers ask them to pay
to select project topic, for approval of their project topic, for supervision of their project and of course, handouts.
The students lament that they do not mind paying for handouts which has become a 'norm' in Nigerian higher institutions, but they do mind the other payments which range from =N=10,000 to =N=25,000 depending on how greedy the lecturer is for each 'service'.
Come on! Is it not bad enough that these students have minimum learning resources available to them?
Is it not bad enough that they have to learn in most cases in environment not conducive for learning?
What about the current harsh economic situation which we all are trying to cope with?
The students claim that some of them who could not afford to pay the exorbitant amounts being demanded by the lecturers have not been able to do their projects which will lead to spending extra year in the institution.
These lecturers must be very insensitive and callous. What type of skill are they teaching our future leaders? Extortion skill?
Disciplinary departments of these universities should stop pretending that it is not happening and sit up and discipline these greedy lecturers.
What do you suggest can be done to curb this menace?
Dat is how dey roll in naija units. I had same problems DAT caused me to spend extra yr.
ReplyDeleteGod will punish all wicked lecturers.
ReplyDeleteThe worst universities that practice this extortion are the universities that are far from cities because they feel they are too far from prying eyes, and the students come mostly from poor or low income homes.
ReplyDeleteThey cannot try it in Unilag or Ife and the likes because they know that the children of the rich and movers & shakers of Nigeria school there.
