Students Mental Health in Nigeria (part 1)

In this part of the world, how seriously do we take Mental         Health of students?

Good Mental Health is key to our wellbeing.

The World Health Organization defines Mental Health as “a state of wellbeing in which the individual realises his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community”.

It follows that if your mental health is negatively affected, your wellbeing and ability to perform properly will equally be affected negatively.

The effect of COVID-19 Lockdown posed various challenges for students all over the world as they had to immediately get used to studying online, isolated and left with little or no help on how to navigate and get used to the new way of learning.

Majority of students suffered serious Mental Health Issues ranging from panic attacks, anxiety, acute loneliness, nervousness, depression to name a few.

International students studying abroad were offered some help like counselling, therapy and medication in appropriate cases. This improved their Mental Wellbeing and in turn helped them to cope better with the new method of studies.

In part 2, we shall look at how Nigerian students were affected and how they coped.

sleep bed tired

Why bedtime is SO important: Children who stay up too late are 'more

likely to suffer depression and anxiety in later life'

  • Lack of sleep 'conjures negative emotions, distorts positive experiences'
  • Study found kids who slept poorly did not enjoy happy times as much
  • Authors warn it could have devastating impact on child's growing mind
According to experts at the University of Houston, children who suffer inadequate or disrupted sleep are far more likely to suffer depression and anxiety as adults.

According to Alfano's research, sleep and emotional development are inextricably linked. She warns that parents need to treat sleep and the child's emotional future as seriously as they do dental hygiene or nutrition.
'Healthy sleep is critical for children's psychological well-being,' Alfano said.'Continually experiencing inadequate sleep can eventually lead to depression, anxiety and other types of emotional problems.'Parents, therefore, need to think about sleep as an essential component of overall health in the same way they do nutrition, dental hygiene and physical activity.

13 MILLION CHILDREN OUT OF SCHOOL IN NIGERIA

😭😭😭
Universal Basic Education Commission has reported that over 13 million children of school age are out of school in Nigeria.
According to UBEC,

Nigeria has made history with 13 million out-of-school children. The sad report came on the heels of Federal Government’s spending over N600 billion since it passed into law, the Universal Basic Education Act, 13 years ago to tackle the menace.

A report by the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) titled: “An overview of Out-of-School Children Syndrome in Nigeria, revealed that “13.2 million children are out of school in Nigeria,” representing between 52.5% and 60% (or more than half) of all the out-of-school children worldwide.
The report, which is considered by education experts as the most current data on the state of basic education in Nigeria was released on January 11, 2017 in Yankari, Bauchi State, at a meeting between UBEC management and heads of the 37 States’ Universal Basic Education Commissions (SUBEBs).

It blamed the rising number of out-of-school children in Nigeria on the menace of Boko Haram in the North East, ‘Area Boys’ (street urchins) in the South West, militancy in the Niger Delta, and the challenges of itinerant farming in parts of Ebonyi State.
According to the 15-page report, which The AUTHORITY accessed, factors such as poverty, “school drain among boys in the South East, lack of political will, weak school management, and a lack of commitment to educational development” may have also accentuated the problem.

*Sad is an understatement for this unfortunate    development.
*Each and every one of us should try our best to get a  child into school, government  cannot do it alone.
