In this part of the world, how seriously do we take Mental Health of students?
Good Mental Health is key to our wellbeing.
The World Health Organization defines Mental Health as “a state of wellbeing in which the individual realises his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community”.
It follows that if your mental health is negatively affected, your wellbeing and ability to perform properly will equally be affected negatively.
The effect of COVID-19 Lockdown posed various challenges for students all over the world as they had to immediately get used to studying online, isolated and left with little or no help on how to navigate and get used to the new way of learning.
Majority of students suffered serious Mental Health Issues ranging from panic attacks, anxiety, acute loneliness, nervousness, depression to name a few.
International students studying abroad were offered some help like counselling, therapy and medication in appropriate cases. This improved their Mental Wellbeing and in turn helped them to cope better with the new method of studies.
In part 2, we shall look at how Nigerian students were affected and how they coped.
