Universal Basic Education Commission has reported that over 13 million children of school age are out of school in Nigeria.
According to UBEC,
Nigeria has made history with 13 million out-of-school children. The sad report came on the heels of Federal Government’s spending over N600 billion since it passed into law, the Universal Basic Education Act, 13 years ago to tackle the menace.
A report by the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) titled: “An overview of Out-of-School Children Syndrome in Nigeria, revealed that “13.2 million children are out of school in Nigeria,” representing between 52.5% and 60% (or more than half) of all the out-of-school children worldwide.
The report, which is considered by education experts as the most current data on the state of basic education in Nigeria was released on January 11, 2017 in Yankari, Bauchi State, at a meeting between UBEC management and heads of the 37 States’ Universal Basic Education Commissions (SUBEBs).
It blamed the rising number of out-of-school children in Nigeria on the menace of Boko Haram in the North East, ‘Area Boys’ (street urchins) in the South West, militancy in the Niger Delta, and the challenges of itinerant farming in parts of Ebonyi State.
According to the 15-page report, which The AUTHORITY accessed, factors such as poverty, “school drain among boys in the South East, lack of political will, weak school management, and a lack of commitment to educational development” may have also accentuated the problem.

*Sad is an understatement for this unfortunate development.
*Each and every one of us should try our best to get a child into school, government cannot do it alone.
